As the Generations Uniting through Movement (GUM) Project is reaching its final stretch, we are excited to showcase how physical activity can bridge the gap between generations. Next week, in Ljubljana, GUM’s methodology will be celebrated, with a final interactive workshop on 13th November at the Moving People, Moving Europe Conference. The workshop will be followed by a reflective closing meeting the next day. These two events mark both a practical and symbolic conclusion to GUM’s journey, celebrating our achievements and envisioning a sustainable future for intergenerational physical activity.

Workshop: Generations #StickTogether in co-creating fun, intergenerational movement

At the heart of the GUM Project lies a commitment to discovering the fun factor in movement—an approach that connects younger and older generations, helping them #sticktogether and learn from one another. By co-creating physical activities, participants foster deeper connections while embracing mutual growth. Research highlights that intergenerational programmes such as these bring positive effects, alleviating loneliness, reducing depression, and enhancing self-esteem and overall well-being.

This workshop offers a blueprint for creating memorable intergenerational physical activities. Conference attendees will gain hands-on experience and gather ideas to take back to their organisations. Facilitated by experts from six countries, including Youth Sport Trust International (UK), Sports Union of Slovenia, BG Be Active (Bulgaria), Deporte Para La Educacion Y La Salud (DES) (Spain), Stichting Hanzehogeschool Groningen (Hanze) (the Netherlands) and Azur Sport Sante (France) this session will allow participants to explore, share, and present co-designed programmes, culminating in group reflections on their experience.

Project Closing Meeting: reflecting and paving the way forward

The following day, GUM’s project consortium will come together for their final in-person meeting, an opportunity to reflect on their journey, celebrate accomplishments, and map out a vision for the future. This meeting will focus on strategies to sustain the GUM project’s impact and discuss recommendations for successful intergenerational programmes moving forward. Project partners will share personal highlights and challenges, ensuring that lessons learnt enrich future endeavours.

Through these events, GUM aims to leave a lasting impact, inspiring communities to connect generations through physical activity. Like the adhesive nature of gum, we hope to build strong bonds that stick - making movement fun and accessible for all ages to bring people together and strengthen communities.
